IPad Air vs MacBook Air for a student?

I already have alaptop, but I can't bring it to school because it is too heavy. I bought an iPad for its lightness (so I can bring it with me to school) and so I can access lecture PDFs, have my math textbook on it, do online homework on it during breaks, etc. I have a compsci class this semester in which 95% of students use laptops. I can write on paper but it is quite inconvenient since I can't run my tests to see if they're right since the application does not work on the iPad. But, I can always go home and test the notes on my laptop. The prof said that we will start going super fast near the middle of the course, but that I can always look at the laptop of the person beside me if I'm feeling lost.

Question: Should I return my iPad and buy a MacBook Air for home and school, or keep my iPad and use that for school & my laptop for home? I would have to write computer science notes on paper, or get an external keyboard for my iPad (still won't be able to run the code).

Thoughts?

For goodness sake, if you are taking a computer science course return the ipad and get a LAPTOP that is not Apple product at all. Apple is for the average person with no special need or interest in computers, and since you are taking a programming class I must assume you have some interest in computers beyond basics needs. Also don't get a chrome book, it is no better.

"I already have alaptop, but I can't bring it to school because it is too heavy."
^^ This would make the MacBook Air a pointless investment.

"I bought an iPad for its lightness (so I can bring it with me to school) and so I can access lecture PDFs, have my math textbook on it, do online homework on it during breaks, etc."
^^ Thats not a bad idea, many college students do this.

" I have a compsci class this semester in which 95% of students use laptops."
^^ You will need to carry your laptop, for any computer science class you need one.

"I can always go home and test the notes on my laptop."
^^ You can do that but sometimes its a good idea to keep up with the professors in class.

"The prof said that we will start going super fast near the middle of the course, but that I can always look at the laptop of the person beside me if I'm feeling lost."
^^ You will soon realize that you will be the only one with an iPad (if you buy one) in your computer science class. Any computer science picks up quickly so it is imperative that you bring your laptop to class.

YOUR MAIN QUESTION:
"Should I return my iPad and buy a MacBook Air for home and school, or keep my iPad and use that for school & my laptop for home?"
^^ An iPad Air with your laptop seems to be a better alternative than having a MacBook Air with your other laptop. But for a computer science class, I will not recommend an iPad or any tablets; you need to take your laptop with you.
